Abstract : This report presents a preliminary theoretical study on the use of an aerosol cloud to attenuate laser radiation. Topics covered in the study include the absorption of laser energy by the aerosol particles, dielectric properties of the aerosol material, and vaporization and breakdown thresholds for the aerosol. The principal conclusion of the study is that small, dipole-resonant aerosol particles offer a promising technique for the efficient attenuation of laser radiation at all flux levels. (Author)
