Abstract : A formalism is developed, by means of boson Second Quantization Theory, which is particularly suitable for the description of the cooperative behavior of n-level systems (or the macroscopic description of laser-type matter). It is shown that semiclassical radiation theory represents the fully classical limit of this formalism. The theory of 'quantum beats' in the spontaneous emission from three-level atoms is analyzed, and criteria for the presence of beats that differ from those found in the recent literature are obtained.
