Abstract : Results of an experimental study of fire behavior in structural debris are reported. The study was conducted in two phases -- the first in the laboratory, the second, involving large-scale burns, in the field. In both phases, debris-fire behavior was observed, rates of fire spread, durations of active flaming (i.e., residence time), and concentrations of gas effluents were measured, and the dependence of the observed and measured debris-fire characteristics on wind speed and on variables in debris composition were investigated.
