Abstract : The inclusion of absorption leads to a generalized form of the ponderomotive force which depends explicitly on the field momentum transferred to the electrons. This generalized force implies, in contrast with the usual ponderomotive force, that time-averaged magnetic fields are generated directly by the radiative forces. The growth rate of the radiatively generated magnetic fields is related simply to the time-averaged Poynting flux I and the collision frequency. The direction and magnitude of the field generation during resonance absorption are in agreement with a more detailed theory.
