Abstract : The report studies the effect of the shape of an impulse of uniform external pressure of sufficient magnitude to cause a bend on the order of shell thickness in thin closed cylindrical shells. As a consequence of inertia in a shell during dynamic loading, the rate of application of the load will be greater than the rate of buildup of deflections. Therefore, the loss of stability takes place at a higher energy level and this leads to possible changes in the shape of wave formation. In order to account for this phenomenon, a shell at a certain level of stability is viewed as an elastic system with k degrees of freedom and the process of wave formation in it assumes a shape which is most favorable for a given load.
