Abstract : The vacuum ultraviolet spectral region presents unique possibilities for monitoring and tracking rocket engine firings above the atmosphere. The exhausts of most hydrocarbon fuels contain large amounts of carbon monoxide. The solar Lyman alpha line is the most intense emission in this spectral region and is scattered by the carbon monoxide modecule. This report presents a calculation of these scattering intensities and predicts the amount of radiation to be expected from this process by an exhaust above the atmosphere in the VUV region.
