Abstract : Former President Richard M. Nixon attempted to form an overall policy for the United States that would achieve a 'generation of peace'. This policy has been carried over into the present administration where varying degrees of force are applied in the political, economic and military fields that will, hopefully. lay the foundation to limit the use of military force in the future. This paper discusses some of the factors that influence the United States in the use of her military power and the trends to limit the use of that power while still securing the national objectives.
