Abstract : Buoys are multi-use platforms. The most numerous and familiar buoys -- those used for navigation -- are not dealt with here, although much of the technology described is common to all buoys. This report addresses itself to the environmental data buoys now being used in increasing numbers to provide meteorological and oceanographic data from lakes, estuaries, coastal waters, and the deep ocean. This report makes no effort to compare or evaluate the merits of data buoys versus other means of environmental data collection, or to establish or define particular needs for data buoys. Environmental and data needs are currently evolving, and the total requirements for many current or probable users have not been fully established. For the purposes of this report, a need is assumed for data buoys in environmental prediction, military operations, and scientific support, with 1973 as the reference year, and 1978-83 as the projection years.
