Abstract : The classical differential formulation of radiative transfer in a gray gas is reevaluated for the condition of arbitrary anisotropy of the intensity distribution. A sectional ellipsoidal model is developed, and used to provide a spatially varying closure condition for the radiation moment equations, valid for arbitrary anisotropy. The model is further used to provide equally applicable boundary conditions. The approach is applied in several examples of pure radiative transfer for gases within straight walled, cylindrical and conical enclosures. Singularities arising in the analysis are identified, the numerical methods for treating them are presented. Application of the ellipsoidal model is made to the radiatively coupled hypersonic flow over a wedge. Differences between the solution are discussed.
