Abstract : Users of database management systems are divided into four groups: databases administrators, programmers, parametric users, and casual users. The interfaces between user and system are divided into three groups: data-oriented, procedure-oriented, and problem-oriented. Two logical models of interfaces are described and evaluated: the network model and the relational model. An extended example is used to demonstrate advantages of each model. Efficiency of implementation is considered, particularly in regard to future hardware developments. (Author)
