Abstract : Qualitative arguments are advanced to show that the nearly horizontal trailing-wire antennas of high-speed, high-altitude aircraft should excite waves of appreciable intensity in the Transverse Electric (TE) polarization. The altitude distribution of these waves should however differ markedly from that of the conventional Transverse Magnetic (TM) waves. To test these ideas, a special balloon receiver-probe was designed and flown. The experimental data provide strong evidence that TE fields from a standard ARC-96 airborne transmitter not only exists, but can be much larger than the associated TM fields at high altitudes.
