Abstract : An ultraviolet interference-filter spectrophotometer has been designed, fabricated, and installed on a WB57F high altitude (about 60 kft) aircraft as part of the department of Transportation Climatic Impact Assessment Program. This instrument (designated the UVS, or UV Spectrophotometer) uses a UV diffuser, ten filters (sets) placed in a rotating wheel, and a high grade reggedized photomultiplier to provide 12 second time-resolved UV spectra in the region between 200 and 400 nm. The objectives of the UVS are to provide SST altitude UV flux data (1) of aid in interpretation of other, simultaneous measurements made on the aircraft, and (2) for purposes of long term monitoring of geographical and seasonal variations. The operating history of the UVS is described and some graphical presentation of total ozone data are given. The UVS has proved very reliable, operating under the extreme environmental conditions of high altitude aircraft flight with no difficulty. Two years of CIAP deployment on the WB57F have demonstrated the long term stability of the UVS. The UVS has proven itself a valuable instrument for various atmospheric monitoring programs.
