Abstract : A series of linear, high molecular weight, trifluoropropyl substituted D2-m-carborane-siloxanes were prepared. These polymers were not as stable as conventional D2-m-carborane-siloxanes, however they exhibited greater thermal and oxidative stability than fluorosilicones. Indeed from TGA studies, the fluorosilicones start to lose weight 50 to 100C below the onset of weight loss for the trifluoropropyl substituted carborane-siloxanes. Improved solvent resistance was obtained by the incorporation of trifluoropropyl groups onto the carborane-siloxane backbone. The tris-trifluoropropyl substituted polymer exhibited low swelling in hydrocarbon based solvents and fuels which was similar to results with fluorosilicones.
