Abstract : A new digital system, the Prony Measuring System, for underwater acoustical measurements from 1 Hz to approximately 2 MHz has been developed at the Underwater Sound Reference Detachment of the Naval Research Laboratory. The heart of the system is a stable signal and sampling source and 12-bit, 5-MHz, analog-to-digital converter with a 4K buffer memory. A PDP-11/23 serves as a controller as well as a signal processor for averaging, and amplitude and phase estimation. The measuring system as a whole can be viewed as an instrument and can be controlled by a host computer or desk-top calculator via the IEEE-488 General-Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB). (Author)
