Abstract : In response to operational requirements for increased aircraft availability, higher performance, and quicker turnaround, aircraft system designs have become increasingly complex. The resulting complexity has created additional demands upon maintenance equipment, maintenance personnel, and logistics resources. Onboard testing was developed to (1) improve maintainability and availability, (2) enhance test philosophies to keep up with increases in system complexity, and (3) reverse the trend toward increasing support and life cycle costs of advanced aircraft. Onboard test is also intended to improve operational readiness of the aircraft through reduced systems downtime. This onboard test design guide is intended to help minimize design problems by drawing on proven design experience and providing guidance based on lessons learned in the development of the Central Integrated Test System (CITS) for the B-1 aircraft.
