Abstract : An analytical method is developed for predicting the vertical motion of a point on a ship relative to the motion of the free surface. The prediction method presented here takes into account the effect of the deformation of the incident waves on the relative motion. The causes of the deformation considered are the waves generated by diffraction and the waves generated by the motion of the ship. The method is based on the two-dimensional approximation of the flow around the cross sections of ships. The results reveal that the deformation of the incident waves is so significant that it should be accounted for in the prediction of the relative motion of ships. (Author)
