Abstract : Discussed briefly is floating point computation as performed on a typical digital computer. Our objective is two-fold: to illustrate the peculiarities of arithmetic in such an environment caused by the imprecise representation of the real number system, and to indicate how various choices in representation and arithmetic algorithms impinge on mathematical software.
