Abstract : A mathematical model is formulated to describe an exothermic gas-solid surface reaction, the rate of which is governed by reactant transport at low flow velocities through a variable-property gas boundary layer. The total available reaction time and the effects of convective and radiative energy losses on the steady-state temperature of the system are calculated for the oxidation of a graphitic carbon slab.
