Abstract : This is a review of dual-task performance findings related to design of a generic workstation performance test. The effect of multiple inputs/outputs on performance is best explained in terms of overlap of input/output requirements on mental resources. Mental resources can be usefully categorized by sensory modality of input/output, stages of mental processing, and laterality of brain function. Inputs/outputs which have overlapping requirements in one of these categories generally interfere with each other. (Author)
