Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to explore the problems involved in the transfer of senior Swiss Army Instructors to civilian executive jobs in the Swiss Department of Defense and to help analyze means of enhancing this transfer. A survey with questions of an open-ended nature provides a wealth of ideas and opinions. It influenced the focus of the literature search and helped reconcile theory with practice. The purpose and the functions of executives are discussed and four main concerns of executives are examined in more detail: leadership, decision-making, innovation and executive development. The discussions focus on those aspects which may be new to senior military instructors transferred to civilian executive jobs. The issue of the development of executive potential in instructors is discussed in the concluding chapter. Sixty percent of the responses state a need for improved education, with the rationale that there is too great a difference between civilian and military problems and leadership.
