Abstract : The Recreational Beaches and Boating Appendix describes the effects of limited regulation of Lake Erie on recreational beaches and boating in the lower Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River system. This evaluation was limited to Lakes Erie and Ontario and part of the St. Lawrence River where the impact was expected to be greatest and due to time and funding constraints. Also, due to these constraints, the study of the effects on recreational boating was confined only to United States waters. Limited regulation of Lake Erie would have the effect of lowering the water level of that lake and those upstream. As a result, there would be losses to recreational boating, with the losses dependent upon the amount of lowering. At the same time, recreational beaches would benefit due to increases in beach area.
