Abstract : Shear bands, intense bands of localized deformation, are a primary source of defective forgings and their occurrence is a significant factor limiting the precision attainable by forging. The occurrence and effects of shear bands are not well understood. There is no test for predicting their occurrence and, therefore, they are averted by the inefficient and costly use of oversize forgings and in-process die reworking. The overall objective of this program is to document the occurrence of shear bands in forged products produced under well defined conditions, develop analytical techniques for their prediction, and evaluate their effects on structural performance.
