Abstract : The ultimate low temperature achieved by a cryocooler is determined by the balance between its intrinsic refrigeration power and its thermal losses. This study examines in detail the thermal losses which occur in a regenerative cycle cryocooler and estimates the low temperature limit for a proposed cryocooler design. The study also discusses possible mechanical systems for providing motive power and the compression and expansion processes required for the refrigeration cycle. (Author)
