Abstract : Work has been carried out on the problems of runup and spinup in a viscoelastic fluid. Three simple problems have been considered. These are: (1) the fluid is confined between two infinite rigid parallel plates. These are simultaneously and instantaneously given equal velocities, which are then maintained constant. The resulting velocity field of the fluid is calculated as a function of time. (2) the fluid is contained in a rigid circular cylinder of infinite length. At some instant the cylinder is given a longitudinal velocity which is subsequently held constant. The resulting velocity field in the fluid is calculated as a function of time. (3) The rigid containing cylinder is, at some instant, given an angular velocity which is subsequently held constant. The resulting angular velocity field in the fluid is calculated.
