Abstract : Two different types of laser-induced gas-phase rate processes are studied theoretically: collisional ionization and multiphoton resonances in atom-atom scattering. The first involves the coupling between bound and continuum electronic states, and the second between bound and continuum vibrational states. In connection with surface processes, the use of a laser to excite electrons from the valence band to surface states of a semiconductor and the resulting effect on an adspecies is explored. (Author)
