Abstract : The essay begins with the observation that sensor/surveillance, targeting, and command and control systems are proliferating at unprecedented rates. Similar concurrent growth in communications capabilities, on which tactical automated systems rely, has not taken place. The key to successful employment of tactical automated systems generate and the author argues that the use of packet radio technology is the best way to satisfy this requirement. (Author)
