Abstract : This thesis deals with choosing preconditioning strategies to accelerate a conjugate gradient algorithm for solving elliptic difference equations, suitable for implementation on a multiprocessor. The hypothetical multiprocessor considered consists of p linearly connected processors. A variety of popular preconditioning strategies for sequential machines are examined. Numerical experiments are conducted and recommendations made. (Author)
