Abstract : This study was begun because in recent years funds to operate the academic fleet have been insufficient despite the continuing scientific importance and practical value of work in academic oceanography. Many of the vessels, especially the larger ones, have been laid up for various periods as a result of financial constraints. There is no immediate prospect for improvement in this situation; and unless new sources of funds are found, indications are that funding for oceanographic research and for ship operations will be inadequate throughout the 19080's. If that is to be the situation, steps must be taken now to alter the academic research fleet so as to preserve the greatest possible measure of sea-going capability within the likely funding constraints.
