Abstract : The carbonization of phenanthrene and the effect of carbonization conditions on the formation of cokes and graphites were studied. Phenanthrene is an organic precursor predominant in coal-tar pitches, that are used in the production of graphite electrodes and as the binder in carbon-carbon composites.
