Abstract : This contract, transferred to the auspices of the SQUID program effective 1 March 1981, was originally planned as a three year program. The objectives were predominantly experimental in nature: to measure the unsteady velocities in the rotor passage of a single stage axial flow compressor and map the velocity field at operating conditions near rotor blade stall. For this purpose a laser doppler velocimeter was to be developed and married to a new single stage axial flow compressor designed expressly for this purpose. At the premature conclusion of the contract, the first successful velocity determination in the running compressor had not been obtained, although the LDA and its associated subsystem was operational. Some compressor cascade modelling studies, ultimately intended to be guided, or 'calibrated' by the experimental results are only partially completed. (Author)
