Abstract : This technical report documents the results of analyses conducted to assess the current level of technology available to determine the probability and extent of FOD to aircraft operating from conventional and bomb-damaged airfield surfaces. The various mechanisms (i.e., jet blast, tire/ground interaction,...) which can create particles which can then cause damage and the level of susceptibility of various aircraft to damage are considered. Engine and airframe vulnerability to FOD is assessed and FOD prevention techniques currently being used are evaluated. The analysis concludes that the current level of technology only permits a qualitative understanding a FOD potential and identifies the information and data necessary to develop a quantitative relationship between debris characteristics and the extent of damage. In addition, a testing program is recommended to establish the quantitative relationship and to permit the development of a prediction methodology. (Author)
