Abstract : This report describes the top-level design of a trainable, intelligent graphics workstation, which is designed to assist desisionmakers to understand and analyse large amounts of data. The system has three key features: it is personalizable, it has facilities for the graphical presentation of data in a wide variety of formats; and it contains a user-programmable event monitor, which automatically searches the data for user-defined patterns. When such a pattern is found, a corresponding user-defined action is triggered. The system was partially implemented and tested experimentally. The experiments attempted to test the key features of the system. The results indicated that the ability to present data in a variety of formats is desirable. Also, the results indicated that the event monitor was potentially a useful aid; however, these results were more ambiguous because of a high degree of inter-subject variability. The report concludes that such a system would be highly effective and that the design is feasible. (Author)
