Abstract : The goal of the study was to develop generic Instructor/Operator Station designs which would improve the instructor's ability to carry out his instructional repsonsibilities during simulation training. Current Instructor/Operator Station designs were assessed and their strengths and weakness evaluated. Design principles were developed to enhance the strengths and eliminate the weaknesses. Two alternative generic Instructor/Operator Station designs are presented. The desings are comparable in training capability. They differ in their methods of instructor control. Alternative 1 features almost exclusive of CRT touch panels. Alternative 2 features a mixture of CRT touch panels and panel-mounted electronic touch pads. Advantages and disadvantages of each alternative are presented. (Author)
