Abstract : A structural analogy is noted between metal-oxides, metal-alkoxides and metal-oxide-alkoxides. This relationship holds for d(O) complexes and for d(n) complexes where the electrons may be used to form M-M bonds which may be used to form M-M bonds which may be localized and of either single or multiple bond order, or, delocalized in cluster molecular orbitals. These electrons in M-M bonds provide for oxidative-addition reactions and the binding of pi-acid ligands such as CO and alkynes. An extensive organometallic chemistry is implicated and certain facets of this are influenced by the pi-donor properties of oxo and alkoxy ligands. (Author)
