Abstract : This project proposes a structure to integrate a variety of Computer-Aided Design tools into a complete design system. Design aids have provided valuable assistance to designers of integrated circuits over the last decade. However, greatly increased circuit complexity, with the approach of more than a million devices on a single chip, is exceeding the capabilities of current design methods. Greater automation and additional design tools are needed. A model is proposed which divides the design process into three stages: Specification, Implementation, and Realization. The Implementation stage is examined in detail. Design requirements can be described at different levels of abstraction, from a description of overall behavior to specific gate-level logic details. The model attempts to satisfy the requirements at the higher levels using existing implementation before resorting to the design of new circuits at the lowest level.
