Abstract : The magnitude of the radar ambiguity function for commonly used radar waveforms is calculated and displayed in three-dimensional diagrams. The ambiguity functions are calculated as a function of range delay and Doppler frequency. For a specified clutter environment and a particular radar waveform, the signal-to-clutter ratio for a desired target is calculated. A method to select a radar waveform, given the desired target detection criteria and clutter environment, is derived. This method relies on the analysis of the magnitude of the ambiguity function, signal-to-clutter ratio, and other basic principles of radar theory. (Author)
