Abstract : Skin application of hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) to rabbits for 3 weeks induced a high incidence of chronic and ulcerative dermatitis in all treatment groups including the lowest dose tested, i.e., 0.7 mg/kg. Higher doses, 1.5 to 11.7 mg/kg, caused Heinz body formation and red blood cell destruction. It is recommended that extreme caution be taken to prevent HAN from coming into contact with the skin. Personal protection, to include rubber gloves and chemical splash goggles, should be worn when working with this material. (Author)
