Abstract : In May and June of 1981, Iroquois Research Institute performed a cultural resources survey of fourteen Mississippi River levee and revetment items in Iberville, St. James, St. Charles, Orleans, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes, Louisiana. The project included a prehistoric and historic background study and literature search, a geomorphological analysis of the survey items, and a systematic archeological survey. Fourteen historic sites were inventoried during the systematic survey. They included a catwalk, a furnace, a wooden platform, two sites containing brick house supports, a residential complex, a canal lock, two possible pump house sites, a navigational light base, a riverside railroad terminal, and a subsurface site. No prehistoric sites were discovered. Recommendations were made for two sites, one containing 18th-19th century ceramics, and the other a canal lock. The ceramic site was evaluated as potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Further testing was recommended to determine its potential eligibility. At the canal lock, the Institute recommended the placement of an historic marker. (Author)
