Abstract : Semiconductor-based photoelectrochemical devices represent good systems for the sustained, direct conversion of light to chemical or electrical energy. The interfacial structure, energetics, and and redox kinetics control the overall performance of such systems. Examples of improvements in efficiency and durability of photoelectrochemical cells stemming from chemical manipulations at semiconductor/liquid electrolyte interfaces illustrate the critical importance of understanding interface properties.
