Abstract : This executive summary reports an analysis of an approach and landing evaluation program using the AFWAL/Calspan NT-33 variable stability aircraft to test the suitability of representing aircraft with complex flight control systems by an equivalent simplified system. An evaluation of the equivalent systems includes effects of time delay, correlations with Pilot Ratings and comparison of frequency response characteristics for both high-order and low-order configurations. Analytical and fast Fourier transform Bode diagrams of the configurations have been plotted with the corresponding step time histories. The effects of gain parameters on the matching of equivalent systems are presented. The resulting response characteristics also serve as a check on the predicted responses as defined by the analytical descriptions programmed in the NT-33. The equivalent systems data have been evaluated with the Neal and Smith closed-loop analysis technique. For the longitudinal evaluations, the validity of the equivalent system approach for evaluation of the flying qualities of complex aircraft was generally verified. The data for the lateral equivalent system evaluations were inconclusive. (Author)
