Abstract : The movement of gun tubes which are large (12 in. dia.), long (20 feet), and heavy (up to 4 tons), through the shops as well as positioning the pieces in machines for metal removal presents an unusual and difficult material handling problem. In 1975, the Watervliet Arsenal MM&T project 6717042 'End Item Manufacturing Guide' included a report prepared by RCC Inc. This report indicated that the move time for gun tubes was determined to be 12% of the total time spent in manufacturing a gun tube. It was felt that this percentage of time could be cut in half by using properly selected material handling systems and equipment. With the 'REARM' program occurring this was the ideal time for modernizing the material handling procedures.
