Abstract : The first part of this paper discusses some of the major theoretical issues and problems with the field of leadership. An idiographic perspective is used in suggesting ways to overcome some of the major obstacles to the better understanding and more effective application of the leadership construct. The last part of the paper describes an actual idiographic study made of leader behavior in a natural setting. A single case experimental design, which was suggested earlier as an effective way to obtain causal implications from an idiographic study (Luthans & Davis, 1981, 1982), is used to make this empirical analysis.
