Abstract : This report studies the optimization of schedules for maintenance or repairs, for repairable stochastically failing systems. The novelty here is that the failure rate after a maintenance operation is a function of the system's previously expended lifetime. This generalizes earlier work by others on the simpler case where the future failure rate depends on the number of previous repairs, but not on the times when they took place. Two major preventive strategies are considered: (1) age replacement or policy 1; (2) periodic replacement with minimal repair at failure or policy II.
