Abstract : This document studies granular jumps generated in the gravity flow of granular materials down an inclined plane. The equations governing the granular flow are reduced to a sequence of boundary value problems of linear ordinary differential equations by means of an asymptotic method. Their solutions are used to determine the Burgers equation, which possesses a progressive wave solution to describe a smooth granular jump. The wave speed and a criterion for the stability of the granular jump are also obtained. (Author)
