Abstract : Resource constraints limit the availability of American military forces to check Soviet expansionism in the Indian Ocean and Southwest Asia. Improved allied cooperation and coordination in the region is necessary to better deter aggression and, if necessary, actively combat it. Australia's western heritage and close ties to the United States and other free world nations makes it unique among Indian Ocean States. This paper suggests specific ways in which the Australian-American security relationship--historically excellent--could be improved to mutual advantage in the region. (Author)
