Abstract : Investigations were made of the feasibility of using Raman techniques to measure the gaseous products of carbon oxidation. A coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering system was assembled to measure carbon monoxide. Approximately 200 micrometer from the graphite surface, carbon monoxide concentrations in the range of 5 to 10% (40 to 80 Torr) were measured during the ablation of ATJ graphite in air at 2000 K. Recommendations were made for improvements to the experimental system. (Author)
