Abstract : The far-infrared spectra of polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) ionomer films containing alkali and alkaline earth ions have been studied, and strong, broad bands whose frequencies are cation-dependent, have been observed and assigned to cation-motion. The force field elements for cations vibrating at sulfonate-containing sites have been obtained for different models of the cation-motion vibration. The effects of hydration, dehydration and thermal annealing are discussed in light of ion-clustering in these materials. (Author)
