Abstract : Drug/alcohol use by enlisted personnel is considered in terms of its effects on interpersonal bonds in small groups of soldiers. As documented in Boys in the Barracks, life for unmarried enlisted troops in the early 1970s was fragmented and isolated; in such conditions, drug and alcohol use offered simple means for creating social support, with potentially disruptive effects on combat effectiveness.
