Abstract : Numerical calculations are shown for a simplified model of a plate subjected to a pressure pulse and a base motion while immersed in an acoustic fluid. Modal series for deflection and velocity converged promptly, but it was found that 20 thin-beam modes were needed to represent time-history bending stresses along the length of a particular steel plate mounted as a cantilever immersed in sea water. A criterion is proposed for calculation of stresses in fluid-structure interactions: the structure must be modeled in enough detail so that individual motions are controlled by stiffness of the structure, with less than 20 percent of critical damping from acoustic radiation.
