Abstract : Numerical calculations are shown for a simplified model of a plate subjected to a pressure pulse and a base motion while immersed in an acoustic fluid. Modal series for deflection and velocity converged promptly, but it was found that 20 thinbeam modes were needed to represent timehistory bending stresses along the length of a particular steel plate mounted as a cantilever immersed in sea water. A criterion is proposed for calculation of stresses in fluidstructure interactions: the structure must be modeled in enough detail so that individual motions are controlled by stiffness of the structure, with less than 20 percent of critical damping from acoustic radiation.
