Abstract : The technique of Pulsed Laser Photolysis - long path laser absorption is employed to study the kinetics of the reaction CH302 + N02 k1 CH302N02 + N2 and the reaction OH + HNO3 k2 N03 + H20. The first reaction was measured over the temperature range 253-353K by following the reactant CH302, while the second reaction was investigated at 298 and 251K by monitoring the product N03. At all temperatures, k1 is found to monotonically increase with increasing N2 pressure over the range 76-722 Torr, indicating that reaction occurs predominantly by addition. The dependence of k1 on N2 pressure shows that the reaction is in the fall-off region between second and third order kinetics. These results are compared with previous results and their atmospheric implications are discussed. The value of k2 obtained agrees well with previous measurements. In addition, the yield of N03 in reaction was directly measured to be near unity at both 298 and 251K.
